Our Mission and Philosophy
To be a leading
proactive company by servicing our clients with quality
engineering solutions through constant growth in knowledge,
skill, training and innovation.
To deliver
projects on time, within budget, properly designed and in
complete compliance with the client's scope of project. Our
goals are achieved by staff adherence to a principal managed
quality control and quality assurance program (QA/QC).
To promote the highest standards of
professionalism and to protect the general welfare of the
client, contractor and the consultant, to improve the practice
of the professional construction consultant and to offer
expertise and knowledge to the construction
industry.
AEC has a dual mission: to help our clients
make distinctive, substantial, and lasting improvements in
their performance and to attract, develop, excite, and retain
exceptional people.
Our Aspirations
Our
mission is supported by four aspirations and enduring values
that guide all of our work: Serve our clients as primary
counselors on overall engineering needs deliver the best of
the firm to every client using most advanced engineering solutions
create an unrivaled environment for superior
talent, experts and specialists in all engineering fields
govern ourselves through a values-driven sense of
service to the consulting profession
Our Enduring
Values As an introduction to AEC four core
values, we offer excerpts from a recent internal interview
with Agha Jafar Khan, the firm's Managing Director.
Impact-driven professional approach
"It's very important to us to combine the notions
of impact and professional approach, because we could each be
impeccable in our approaches yet not necessarily achieve the
impact to which we aspire. We want to make a difference in the
institutions we serve individually, while collectively serving
enough leading institutions so as to have broader impact on
the engineering community and society."
Being and
delivering the best "This is rooted in our drive
to develop knowledge and technical expertise and to convey
that those to every client, every time. I would argue that, in
a professional services firm, if knowledge and being the best
aren't part of our core values, then we're missing something."
Caring meritocracy, committed to people
"There's an interesting tension between those
words. Without a true meritocracy, we won't be able to
maintain our quality standards or attract the kind of people
we want to attract. But at the same time, I think everybody
here feels this is a collegial community, and one that is very
committed to caring about our people." "Dedication to people
development is essential to maintaining our long-term
competitiveness. If you come here, we make the implicit
promise that we're going to provide you with developmental
opportunities rarely found by fresh graduates in the
engineering industry."
Self-governing, experts
council "This is
about how we manage ourselves and what kind of organization we
want to be. This is not a firm of senior engineers and junior
field followers; it is a firm of experts and leaders who want
to have the freedom to do what they think is right for the
engineering profession. From your very first day with us,
you're not only expected to do your assigned task, you're
expected to step forward and do something about the issues and
opportunities you care about be it in civil engineering,
public health, state of rural development or the internet
economy. The only way we can keep such a large collection of
outstanding experts and leaders is through self-governance -
so that people feel that they can control their own destiny
and that they can make a difference in this place. "Experts
council" simply means that we're all in this together and that
all our incentives, evaluation processes, and the like apply
firm wide.
The Way We Work .......
Approach &
Methodology
We
take a positive "hands-on" approach to all of our projects. We make available
to our clients the experience gained from a variety of challenging facility
and infrastructure projects.
At
all levels, the work is subject to independent checking before final checking
and approval by the Project Manager. Each project has a quality plan,
and at every stage of the work there is a strong emphasis on analysis,
communication and verification.
The
assurance of quality begins at the proposal stage with a detailed analysis
of the scope of work, the methods to be used, a detailed list of deliverables
and an activity schedule to ensure that the work is properly planned and
can be satisfactorily executed in the allowable time.
Studies
are often split into two phases. The first phase enables an overview of
the problem and identification of the most appropriate means of analysis.
A Client Review at the end of the first phase provides further assurance
that the overall objectives will be efficiently achieved.
The
second phase ensures that the detailed investigations are properly focused
and that the work can be completed with the optimum use of time and budget.
Before
commencing the work, all specialist items that may be needed, (such as
proprietary software programs), will have been identified and measures
taken to ensure their availability according to the schedule. Only software,
formulae and calculations that are proven and accepted by the industry
are used. For most projects a schedule is prepared, which summaries the
key personnel, activities and schedule milestones.
Our
engineers are familiar with the standards that apply to engineering projects,
and with the means to execute the work. For critical calculations, detailed
checking is supplemented by independent calculations using alternative methods.
Contact between the engineers, supervisors and clients takes place on a routine
basis, with formal meetings at least once per week.
Prior
to issue, all work is circulated for checking by at least a Principal Engineer.
A review meeting is held to discuss all comments on the work.
The revised work
is similarly checked prior to issue. Reports are normally
issued in final quality format. By working to a well defined
scope of work, client comments are normally minimal and the
first issue of the report is usually accepted as the final
issue.
AEC Guiding
Principles ........
Perseverance - Time or length of day
has no meaning. We are done when our customers needs are
met.
Commitment - We are a service
business. Service means timeliness, keeping promises, being
accessible, responsible and providing
quality.
Quality Assurance
- We pursue excellence in all that we do through
a continuous quest for quality improvement. We won't put out
drawings or reports that are in any way incorrect, with
misspelled words, and/or in any way sloppy. Our firm will
always be known for providing a practical, hands-on and
thorough approach.
Project Management
- Economic pressure emphasizes the need for
increased efficiency. Good Project management that relies on
sound information is the key to the appropriate use of
resources and an improved return on
investment.
In this context proper Project
Management is vital. We are all aware of the potential
difficulties associated with project control, we all know the
effect of scope changes: delays, inappropriate deliveries, and
other contingencies. No matter how well prepared, projects
must always face the test of the unpredictable and Project
Management must provide the tools to model the impact of
change and allow for the best possible decisions to be made at
crucial times. This is geared to provide expert assistance in
planning and control of projects. We assist with optimizing
use of resources and improving economic return.
Communication - We will communicate
regularly with our partner clients to let them know of our
progress, problems, and how their schedules will be
met.
Customer
Satisfaction
- We are committed to deliver reliable,
responsible and accountable business practices in order to
ensure customer satisfaction.
Value
- When clients ask for a service we will look far beyond what
they ask for and provide them with integrated value they
didn't realize they were getting.
Innovations - We will always pursue
the cutting edge of technology, both in our designs and in our
working tools. We will know, understand, and apply technology
far and away above that of any competitors. Our firm will
always excel in formulating and applying ideas and
concepts.
Safety
- We provide a safe and healthy working environment for our
members, as free as practicable from hazards and
accidents.
Leadership - We lead with openness,
fairness, and integrity. The health of the Group depends upon
member trust, empowerment, and involvement in the future
direction of the business.
Integrity - We will always conduct
ourselves in an ethical, professional, and cooperative manner
with our clients and associates. Everyone makes mistakes. We
will always own up to ours immediately and be
responsible.
Continuous
Improvement
- We will continually improve the quality and
value of all our processes and people resources. This means
continuous study of our clients needs and continuous support
for personal growth.
Corporate - We take seriously our
responsibilities to the professions we practice; to public
health, infrastructure, water resources, safety, and welfare;
to the communities where we live and work. We are
professionally independent and member-owned and our
conservative fiscal management provides stability.
